My first visit at Your Local was a confusion of sorts. After the 9am CCF Service that Sunday, my sister, the baby popeye and I usually hunt down new restaurants to try. The restaurant “Your Local” is in my short hit list, but I haven’t had the chance to go since it’s located in my favorite “most light traffic” place, Makati. I was unusually game to drive to Makati that day, since it’s Sunday, and Waze my way into finding Your Local. My sister was the one helping me navigate through Waze. We finally hit Esteban street and Shobe pointed that we’ve reached the place upon seeing the signage. I parked the car and we entered the door excitedly.
The restaurant was quite spacious with high ceilings to boot. We picked a corner table and settled. I think it was self-service so I went to the counter to order. Perusing their menu, I couldn’t quite grasp why they only have sandwiches and not main dishes. I asked if that’s all they have in their menu and got confirmation. A few moments later, I realized we were not inside Your Local but Yardstick. Mortified, we gathered our things and walked out quietly, but given away by our loudly grumbling tummies. We finally figured that its entrance was inside the building. We went in and wondered why Your Local’s door was closed even after an eager nudge. The building guard informed us that it’s closed on Sundays. Tug-dug-toinks!
We just headed to Rockwell for that Sunday lunch. Relentless, I invited my good friend EBL the following Friday to check out Your Local braving Friday traffic in Makati. Surprisingly we didn’t encounter any like the universe meant us to go. We didn’t have a reservation but 5 minutes into waiting, we were seated and even had the bar or a table as an option.
Your Local’s semi-industrial and urban interiors feature white subway tiles lining up the wall, pendant lights, and an open kitchen whose window counter also serves as a bar.
On the Table
Beef Rendang Buns P280
Beef rending, smoked aioli, pickled cucumber, cilantro in fried mantou
Shredded beef cooked rendang-style flaunts tons of rich flavors cooled by the cucumber and cilantro in this beautiful golden-fried mantou.
Chili Crab Buns P280
Chili crab, cucumber spears, leeks, cilantro in fried mantou
This is another Your Local’s deep fried mantou sandwich version, this time with shredded crab meat reminiscent of the taste of Singaporean chili crabs. Also delicioso!
Lamb Rendang P430
Lamb rending, sous vide organic egg, sweet soy, mint, cilantro with red raisin black rice
This was a new order on my second visit.
Torched Salmon Donburi P390
Torched Norwegian Salmon (cooked medium), mentaiko, ebiko, and crisp salmon skin on roast corn and shitake black rice
This should not be missed during any visit at Your Local. I ordered this the two times I visited. The salmon slices are only lightly scorched leaving parts partially medium-rare, it’s melting tender with the mentaiko Jap mayo on top amplifying its creaminess. The crispy salmon skin cuts in with a salty shade and a snap of texture. There’s a carnival of flavors going on in the bowl and perfectly partnered by the shitake black rice.
Interesting to try their Chorizo Sandwich (P490), burnt onion and chorizo jam, pepperoncini cream cheese, fried egg, wild rocket on a squid ink bun with parmesan fries and chorizo ketchup and their Fried Egg and Bacon Jam Sandwich (P475), coffee infused bacon jam, Bleu cheese, fried egg, wild rocket on squid ink bun.
Excuse my photos as I took it with my not so trusty iPhone4. The second time I visited with Wendy and Maddie the next week, I brought my camera and excited to snap shots… only to find my battery dead. I think I’m meant to visit Your Local again and again. Can you please open in the Ortigas CBD? I’ll be a regular in your joint.
